On January 30, 2020, the Philippines recorded its first novel coronavirus case. Since then, we have known nothing but a series of lockdowns for this year. Despite the preventive rules and regulations brought to us by the government, the number of positive cases in the country still keeps on rising. In fact, as of July 13, 2020, the Philippines now has a total of 57,006 confirmed cases and 1, 599 deaths along with it. All this data is leading us to one thing: how can we protect our family?
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently gave a statement that it has approved the use of two Lysol products against the novel coronavirus. These products are the Lysol Disinfectant Spray and the Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist. These were approved for use on hard, nonporous surfaces. Before this statement, there were already many studies and researches on the analysis of products like Lysol and Chlorine to combat the virus. The findings indicated a 99.9% efficiency against the coronavirus.
You might be wondering, with all the products approved by the EPA, why are we stressing on Lysol? Although there are now already more than forty products EPA approved to fight against the coronavirus, these Lysol products were the first to be tested against coronavirus itself. “The best scientific studies indicate that alcohol-containing solutions of at least 60 percent proof are most effective in killing viruses like SARS-CoV-2 that are non-enveloped viruses. Lysol has 40.33 percent alcohol and other ingredients that may be effective,” Dr. Carl Fichtenbaum, professor of clinical medicine, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine said.
Dr. Jay Woody, FACEP, chief medical officer of Intuitive Health and a co-founder of Legacy ER & Urgent Care have also discussed that when they have tested these Lysol products, they were able to eliminate the virus in the surfaces in just two minutes. But in the middle of all this slight victory, Reckitt Benckiser Group, the ones responsible for producing Lysol gently reminded the public that “As a global leader in health and hygiene products, we must be clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body (through injection, ingestion or any other route). As with all products, our disinfectant and hygiene products should only be used as intended and in line with usage guidelines. Please read the label and safety information.” As any disinfectant, it is important to religiously follow the safety precautions of each one readily available on the label. There are also precautions that we need to follow like wearing gloves and ensuring proper ventilation when using these products.
With this, it is apparent that as part of our precautions in fighting Covid-19, we also need to buy Lysol and use it in the comforts of our homes. With all that is happening, the safer choice is still to abide by our new normal, the online shopping.
